Kupala Night in the Zawilcze Forest
The dense, damp forest of Zawilcza stretched behind the village of Strzygi like a sea of dark green, and in its shadow hid stories older than the huts on the hill itself. It was here, where moss overgrew the trunks of old oaks and the night sounds mingled with the laughter of forest spirits, that Mila and Radomir decided to spend the Kupala Night.
Mila, with her raven-black braids and eyes as sharp as a lake, had come here with her mother years before. Radomir, on the other hand, broad-shouldered and always ready to laugh, knew all the forest paths, as he grew up at the very edge of the forest. Together, they planned that night to find the legendary fern flower, which was only supposed to appear once a year, in the middle of the summer night.
The forest was alive - beetles crunched in the mulch, night birds called quietly, and somewhere between the ferns flashed the shadow of a creature neither of them could name. When they reached a large oak tree, where Borowy himself - the lord of the forest - is said to have once rested, they lit a small bonfire. Scraps of old songs whispered in their heads, carrying tales of mermaids, drowners and ancient ghosts.
- Can you hear it? - asked Mila, when the flame danced suddenly higher, as if something had blown on the embers.
Radomir nodded his head. His gaze moved over the scrub, where narrow trickles of moonlight cut through the darkness. In this silence, raindrops fell, though the sky was clear, and from behind the bushes came their deafening laughter, too close, too human to be just the sound of trees.
Before they had time to get up, the campfire had dimmed. A cool breeze blew around them, but there was no smell of storm - rather something wild, musky. At the same moment, they noticed that a tiny, barely visible plant had grown between the roots of the oak tree - its leaves glowed with a bluish radiance.
Mila reached out her hand, but Radomir stopped her with a gesture. Tiny lights shone around them, as if the whole forest was breathing luminous energy. Then a figure stepped out from behind a tree - tall, with moss wrapping around its shoulders, and its eyes glowed green.
Stunned by the sight, Mila looked at Radomir, who merely nodded towards the being. As they both took a step forward, they realised that on this night in the Zawilcze forest, nothing would be as it seemed....
