Kaleidoscopic doors
The attic at her grandmother's house smelled of dust and old orange marmalade.
Lena pushed aside a box on which someone had written: EXPLORATION.
The lid slammed and the dust danced in a shaft of light.
Inside lay a wooden kaleidoscope and a note: "Don't look after sunset".
A small pink lantern was painted on the lid with dried paint.
Lena always liked strange things that no one noticed.
"Too late!" - snorted Kuba, who was climbing the ladder.
The pink streak was fading on the horizon and the cuckoo clock was silent.
Lena put the kaleidoscope to her eye and froze on the stairs.
Instead of rooftops, she saw a wide sea and a tiny green ship.
Sand rustled slightly under her shoe, even though she was in the attic.
The Christmas tree needles in the corner rustled, though the breeze did not blow.
A cuckoo put its beak out, but did not dare to caw.
"I think it's a deception of the light," muttered Cuba, but he looked too.
Then the kaleidoscope became as warm as a tea cup.
The luminous outline of a door with a round handle appeared on the wall.
The outline trembled, as if someone was drawing it from that side.
From the kaleidoscope came the smell of the sea and the purr of an invisible engine.
The light ran down the bricks like milk down a white bowl.
"Lena, can you hear?" - Cuba lowered his voice as something knocked.
Three times, slowly, with the patience of someone who knows the place.
The doorknob moved on its own and the dust settled into the letter L.
Lena tightened her fingers on the kaleidoscope as the door began to swing open.
