Island under the Blood Moon
A cold, salty wind streaked their faces as the slender wooden drakkar sailed through the rough steel sea. Svar, Torsten's son, clasped his hand more tightly on his oar, trying not to betray his anxiety. He was the oldest of the young warriors on board, and the expedition to the east was their first test of courage together. Next to him, with eyes alight with excitement, sat Olof - a somewhat reckless but reliable friend - and Jorunn, the only girl in the crew, whose bravery had often put the boys to shame.
Behind them stretched an unfriendly fog. Far on the horizon flashed the red reflections of the rising moon, which that night was large, round and strangely drenched in the colour of blood. Svar had heard old stories about such nights - supposedly the world changed beyond recognition then.
"Hey, what's that?" - shouted Olof suddenly, pointing his finger at something in the mist. After a moment, an island emerged - they had never seen it on any map in their home fjord. It was shrouded in thick greenery, and abandoned old boats could be seen on the shore, as if waiting for someone who had never returned.
The crew unanimously decided: they would moor on the island, because there was no room for fear among the young Vikings. As they came ashore, the air became heavier, smelling of dampness and ash.
Pushing through the thicket, they came upon an abandoned village. A layer of moss covered the wooden huts and the doors stood open, as if someone had only stepped out for a moment. Suddenly, a quiet, dragging sound came from one of the buildings - something like a human whisper, or perhaps the rustling of an old coat. Svar grabbed his axe, Olof looked around nervously, and Jorunn raised her short spear.
"We are not alone here..." - whispered Svar, barely audibly.
At that moment, something ran out from behind the hut - but they did not have time to see what it was. The branches rustled and the ground trembled beneath their feet. The young Vikings, with their hearts beating harder than ever, looked after each other. What or who was waiting for them in the depths of the island?
