Did You Know?

In the shadow of the double moon

In the shadow of the double moon
The night was disturbingly bright, although the streetlights were not working at all. Two moons stretched over the small town of Vishnu, as if someone had added an extra light in the sky. The second one, slightly smaller and bluish, appeared suddenly, as if in response to the craziest wishes of the inhabitants. People stood in the windows, took photos, commented online, but no one knew what was happening. Ada, Igor, Lena and Patryk walked slowly along the overgrown path behind an old rabbit that appeared out of nowhere and stopped every now and then, looking at them with obvious disapproval. The garden it led to had been abandoned for years - everyone in town whispered all sorts of stories about it, but no one dared to go further than the first alley. Even so, something that night made neither of them feel any fear. Maybe it was the interaction of the two moons, or maybe it was just curiosity winning out over reason. They made their way through the first gate of wrought iron, laced with wild vines whose leaves emanated a strange silvery glow. The air was strangely thick here, suffused with the faint scent of damp earth and old wood. Everything around seemed to tremble - the grass, the leaves, even the rusty bicycles standing in the corner. - Do you also feel... as if everything here is watching us? - whispered Lena, glancing surreptitiously at the flowering shrubs whose buds fanned out to the rhythm of the night breeze. - 'Or it was listening,' added Patrick, trying not to look at the owl sculpture, which seemed to change the position of its wings every time they blinked. Ada, the most sceptical of the four, tried to make rational sense of it all, although her heart was beating suspiciously fast. - It's just that everything looks different in the light of these... moons. Maybe it's just a play of light? Suddenly, Igor stood up as if he had been caught off guard. Near the pond, from where only the croaking of frogs usually came, a quiet singing could be heard, as if someone was playing a fiddle underwater. - Can you hear it? - He asked, and his voice combed the silence. - I think it's music. They approached slowly, parting the tall, silvery grasses. And then the music stopped, and a brilliant circle of light appeared on the surface of the pond, larger than both moon discs combined. Something - or someone - began to emerge from it. No one dared to take a step further. A shudder passed over the garden, as if everything had stopped for a second just before something they had been waiting for all their lives.
