Did You Know?

Hundred Door Street

Hundred Door Street
Adrian always thought that nothing interesting was happening in his town. In the evenings, he would lie on his bed, listening to the sounds of passing cars and waiting for something to change his everyday life. That evening, however, as midnight struck on the clock, he heard a quiet knock on the window. There stood Nina, his neighbour - with sparkling eyes and a wide smile. - Adrian, come on! You've got to see this! - she whispered conspiratorially. Without a shadow of hesitation, he threw on his jacket and slipped out of the house. Nina didn't explain for a long time, just led him through the empty streets to the old park. There, under a large, twisted oak tree, there was a street lamp that twinkled as if inviting them inside a tunnel of light. And indeed - beneath the lamp, a wide, cobbled alley opened up that no one had seen before. On its sides grew trees, but each had a tall, colourful door in its trunk. Doors of green, red, with shiny handles, even ones decorated with old clocks and glowing knobs. - There are probably a hundred of them here! - whispered Nina, not hiding her delight. - Imagine where each of them leads.... Adrian felt his heart beating harder. He slowly walked towards the nearest door. There was a warm light smouldering inside, as if someone was expecting them there. The door right next to them was painted in black and white stripes, and the smell of coffee and the sounds of jazz music came from the round window. - 'Do you think it's OK to come in? - he asked in a whisper. Nina was already extending her hand to the handle of the first door when suddenly all the trees splintered and laughter rang out in the distance - strange, melodic and slightly disturbing. The door opened slightly, as if waiting for the children to enter and discover what was hidden on the other side. - Perhaps each of them leads to a different world? - suggested Nina, looking at the colourful entrances with fascination and a slight tremble. Silence fell on the avenue, with only the wind rustling the leaves. The choice was difficult: should they open the door with the carved owl or the one with the painting of a starry sky? Adrian had already stretched out his hand when a stronger wind blew, and the door opposite them shook and swung wide, inviting them in. Purple light flashed from within, and sparks floating in the air formed swirling patterns. Adrian and Nina looked at each other, feeling both excitement and a hint of uncertainty. They took the first step towards the open door, not yet knowing what awaited on the other side and whether a return to ordinary life would still be possible....
