Hela and the mysterious egg
At the edge of the park lived Hela the hedgehog. She had a small rucksack, acorns and a magnifying glass. She enjoyed exploring the paths, the bushes and the old pond. Every day she welcomed the ducks and the playful frogs. The dog Boris guarded the gate with Mr Leon. Hela collected treasures into a little yellow pocket.
One morning something flashed under the willow tree. Hela approached slowly and held her breath. There lay a blue, mottled egg. It was as warm as a cup of winter cocoa. Next to it were small, wet footprints in the sand. I think it's lost, whispered Hela quietly. Boris wagged his tail and barked raucously. Mr Leon looked at the egg and mused. Mr Leon said: "The nest could be by the water." "Or in the reeds, if the wind moves them."
Hela arranged the egg in a soft cap. They moved along a path with footsteps towards the pond. The reeds rustled like paper and the water splashed. Suddenly the egg twitched and cracked slightly. A tiny silver claw slipped out of the crack. Do you hear, Boris, how it is beeping now? Boris stood like a statue and listened. The shadow of the great wing covered the water and the grass. What had just circled above them high up there?
