Hania and the Fern Flower
Hania lived at the edge of an old forest.
In the cottage, a cheerful homemaker whispered quietly.
He watched over the pots and the little red shawl.
One night the wind smelled of honey and smoke.
From afar, a green sign flashed above the forest.
- 'I think it's a fern flower,' whispered the homely man.
- It only shines like that once a year.
Hania shook her handkerchief and picked up the torch.
Mum was asleep and the stars twinkled above the roof.
- I'll go to the edge, just for a little while,' she said.
In the forest, the path was as soft as moss.
Ferns whispered and an owl counted steps.
Suddenly a tree snapped its branches above Hania.
Between the trunks stood Leszy in a crown of twigs.
He had eyes like a lake and a voice like a leaf.
- Are you looking for the light, child? - He asked very quietly.
Behind his back something flashed and rustled.
Hania lifted the torch and saw a long golden shell.
Something big moved in the ferns.
