Hania and Olek and the Crooked Lantern's Secret
It was Christmas Eve morning, and snow was falling softly like powder.
Hania was hanging lights on the tall Christmas tree, while Mum was sealing dumplings in the warm kitchen.
Suddenly, the bell at the front door rang.
On the doormat lay a red envelope marked with a glittering star and a large golden M.
Hania carefully opened it with trembling fingers.
Inside was a small folded note. She read aloud:
"Please help me. My sleigh bell has disappeared. I can’t move without it. Signed, Santa Claus."
Hania quickly ran to get her brother, Olek.
They both put on warm jackets and hats. Outside, tiny deep footprints dotted the snow — they looked just like the hooves of little reindeer.
The prints led past the house and into the park, where a milky mist hung low and everything was perfectly still.
Then, faintly, they heard the soft sound of a bell.
It seemed to come from beneath the old crooked lantern in the park.
Under the lantern stood a wooden trunk with a tiny door. On the door hung a silver key tied with a ribbon.
Who could have left it there?
Hania gripped the lantern post and looked at Olek. He nodded, his heart pounding.
The bell’s sound grew stronger. The little door quivered, then creaked open a crack.
A warm golden light spilled through the gap. A whisper — then a quiet thud — came from inside.
Hania lifted the key... and the door slowly began to move.
