Guardians of the Imagination
If someone had asked Milosz what was most unusual about the boarding school at Oak Hill High School, he would have mentioned-boredom-without hesitation. A seemingly ordinary old building with mediocre food and even more mediocre homework, it hid the atmosphere of a lazy afternoon that quickly turned into colourlessness. But that was before this Thursday.
The four friends-Miles, Lena, Bartek and Agatha-had long considered themselves sceptics of adventure. They were just sitting on the floor in the recreation room, playing a board game, when a strange wind broke. A candle, which was not allowed here (and which Lena had brought for the climate), trembled, splattering dancing shadows all around.
-What was that?" asked Agatha, raising her head from above the board. The door to the corridor creaked open, although no one touched it. They all looked at each other and then at the darkness that began to pour out from under the door like a thick shadow.
Bartek, the bravest of the group, walked slowly to the door and swung it open. Instead of the familiar, illuminated corridor, they saw.... something else. The walls shone with a metallic sheen, lights dangled from the ceiling like inverted stars, and the floor seemed to move with every step.
-Impossible, after all,‖ Lena whispered, staring into a space that had never been here before.
Milosz felt a shiver run down his spine. The corridor stretched on forever, and on either side of it appeared doors to rooms none of them had ever seen. On one of them hung a sign that read: "Room of Changing Dreams".
Agata took a step forward, but Bartek grabbed her arm. Just then a whisper came from behind the nearest door. Quietly at first, barely perceptible, then louder and louder, until finally they could all hear: "We are waiting for you..."
As Lena reached for the door handle, the light in the recreation room dimmed. The shadows began to dance faster and faster, and the floor beneath their feet trembled. For a second, all four looked into each other's eyes. Would they enter a corridor that should not exist?
In that one moment, as the door slowly opened, each of them understood: if they crossed the threshold, their lives would never be the same again....
