Fog shrouded the streets of the town of Lysgard as Lena, Victor and Anna shuffled between the empty houses. Every night, at exactly the same hour, a mysterious glow emanated from under the old clock tower. Their curiosity was stronger than their fear - they knew that on this night they had to find out what was hiding under the stone staircase. The clatter of their footsteps echoed as they descended into the square, where the tower stood like a silent sentinel. Lena, the bravest of the three, slipped her fingers into a crack in the wall. The stone gave way surprisingly easily, revealing a hidden passage. A cool light burst from within, spilling over the cobbled street. - Are you sure? - Anna asked, clutching a leather-bound book they had found in the attic of the school. - 'It's now or never,' replied Victor. - After all, everything here has been kind of weird for the last few weeks. They cautiously began to descend. The stairs were slippery and the air smelled of ozone and dampness. At the end of the stairs, a small corridor awaited. The walls were swirling with luminous patterns reminiscent of the aurora borealis, changing colours as if they were breathing. The gazes of all three fell on something that looked like a mirror, but its surface rippled as if made of liquid mercury. - It looks like... a gate? - whispered Lena. Victor was already extending his hand when suddenly, from behind them, there was a rustling sound. Someone or something had slid down the stairs, or more precisely, a shadow that seemed to have a consciousness of its own. Before they had time to look up, the light on the walls went out and the mirror began to brighten to a blinding white. Strands of shadow swirled around their ankles and their hearts pounded like mad. Suddenly, Lena felt a cold touch on her shoulder - and then everything around her stood still. The mirror opened, showing the world on the other side, and a shadow loomed wide on the threshold. At that exact moment, they heard the first audible voice coming from the light:
