Glass Roses of the Old Town

Glass Roses of the Old Town
August twilight in Gdańsk has a magic of its own, although most people don't even think about it. The air then smells of the sea, heated cobblestones and something else - perhaps a harbinger of a storm, or perhaps something that escapes logical explanation. Lena liked to wander the streets of the old town then, especially those not shown to tourists on the colourful maps. On this day, she was walking alone along the cobbled St Mary's Street. Older buildings peeked through the windows of glass and amber shops, and lazy café music echoed high beneath the rooftops. Lena had just given up on a summer meeting with friends because she felt she had to be somewhere else. Just like that - for no reason that could be explained to anyone. She was walking past her favourite shop window, where someone was arranging glass roses the colour of sunset. Suddenly she noticed that one of the flowers moved gently, as if it had just sighed or moved its stem in greeting. She blinked, slowing her step, but everything was already motionless. Maybe it's her reflection, maybe the play of light - she tried to convince herself, but in a moment the same rose subtly changed colour to a deep blue. Lena took a tentative step towards the shop window. Behind the glass, among the usual trinkets, she noticed the reflection of something that looked like a fragment of a crumpled piece of paper. A light flashed next to it. A glass rose twinkled and its shadow on the glass formed a shape that resembled the letter L - as if it was casting a shadow just for her. Lena felt that someone was watching her. She looked through the glass - no one except her and the shopkeeper, who was reading a book in the corner. The girl breathed deeply. It was getting dusk, the air thickening with the hum of distant conversations and the clatter of footsteps on the cobblestones. At that moment, everything in her said: go on! But something equally strong told her to stay and take another look at the shop. Literally at that moment there was the sound of a bell at the door. Lena turned abruptly and saw a boy in a black coat step inside in one confident movement.... She didn't even flinch when his gaze swept over her, stopped on the glass roses, and then returned to her with a strange, disturbing certainty. Should he know her? Why - through the glass - did he show her a gentle, barely visible nod? Lena felt her heart begin to pound faster. Just then, the shopkeeper standing in the corner closed her book and moved towards them, completely changing her expression. Something in her gaze made Lena realise that she had found herself in a place from which she could not leave so easily.
