Did You Know?

Glass City under the Moon

Glass City under the Moon
Lena always claimed that the world was too small to satisfy her. She spent her post-high school holidays with Igor on bikes, exploring the old roads around her hometown. On this day, the sun was slowly going to bed as they turned off the main route, intrigued by an unmarked path winding through the forest. The forest seemed different from the usual. The air had a slight purple glow to it, and every now and then their bikes would get bogged down in moss thicker than carpet. Igor joked that a voracious dwarf was about to jump out into their path, but Lena felt a strange anxiety lined with excitement. The path ended abruptly, giving way to a huge, milky white lake. Above the water there was a silvery misty dust. Lena noticed something shimmering on the other side of the surface. They crossed the border of the lake over a stony bridge - and then everything changed. As soon as they stood on the other shore, the mist parted, revealing a panorama of a city built of glass. The tall towers shone in the moonlight and the streets resembled a spider's web illuminated by colourful sparkles. Passers-by had wings made of feathers or crystals and talked in a singing whisper. The sounds of harps drifted through the air, mixed with the scent of hot chocolate and flowers of unknown species. Before they had time to ask themselves if they were dreaming, a tall, slim boy in a long navy blue coat ran up to their feet. He looked not much older than them, although his eyes had the depth of night. He smiled slightly, as if he had been waiting for them for a long time. - 'You are in the Glass City, chosen by the moonlight,' he said, bowing gracefully. - Everyone who comes here gets a chance to know the true nature of this place. But you must hurry. Time passes differently here, and not everyone who has crossed the lake has returned the same. Lena looked at Igor; he was wide-eyed, but excitement was visible on his face. Passers-by smiled at them, as if they were part of some important event. Somewhere in the distance, a low, vibrating bell sounded, making the air shake slightly. - 'Come on, before the gates close,' the boy whispered and moved towards the wrought-iron glass gate leading into the heart of the city. Lena hesitated only a moment. She grabbed Igor's hand and set off after the guide, leaving the familiar world behind. They didn't know what challenges awaited them on the other side of the gate, or what the strange stares from the locals meant. Just before they crossed the threshold of the Glass City, blue lightning cut through the night sky and the towers flashed with a warning light. In the distance, there was a protracted scream that seemed to foreshadow something that was already waiting for them....
