Gate under the Old Town

Gate under the Old Town
Holidays in Toruń have always had a taste for adventure, but on the fourteenth day of July the atmosphere was different. Apparently, in summer, the city calmed down and breathed silence, where untold stories were hidden. However, Maja and her brother Kuba could not complain of boredom - on this day they set off with their friends Zosia and Arthur towards the ruins of the old walls, hidden away from the tourist routes. They descended slippery stone steps towards the dark tunnels beneath the old town. Torches trembled in their hands, illuminating the brick vaults. Artur, as usual, was the first to look into the side alcoves every now and then, searching for something unusual. Zosia, meanwhile, was filming everything on her phone, catching shots perfect for TikTok. Maja suddenly stopped under a blurred inscription. "Have you seen this?" - she whispered, pointing to the wall where the fresco depicted a massive gate with animal heads and writhing plants. Mai's gaze was drawn to a strange symbol - something between a spiral and an eye. Kuba moved his hand over the bricks. Suddenly, one of them retracted with a quiet click. There was a dragging noise from the darkness and the wall parted, revealing a shiny, iridescent passage. For a moment, no one moved. Arthur was the first to reach out his hand; when he plunged it into the luminous sheet, it disappeared as if he had plunged it underwater. Fear and excitement appeared on the faces of his friends at the same time. "Shall we go in?" - Zosia asked more quietly than usual. A moment later, everyone was already standing on the other side. Instead of the cool corridors beneath Torun, they found themselves at the edge of a glowing forest. The trees had silver leaves and their trunks shimmered with shades of purple. In the distance they could see the silhouettes of creatures that resembled deer, but were covered in scales and had luminous antlers. The air smelled sweet, as if someone had scattered cotton candy between the leaves. "Should we go back?" - chuckled Cuba, but no one answered him. Each of them felt that this was only the beginning. Behind their backs, the portal flashed with a sharp light. A metallic sound rang out and the air swirled. Maja wanted to turn away, but then a deep, pearly laughter came from the side of the forest And the echo of their own names.
