Gate under the Old Oak
There wasn't much going on in the town of Roseville, especially in the summer. Ari spent her long evenings mainly with Kacper and Natasha, her best friends. Their favourite place was the old cemetery park on the hill, where a huge oak tree grew, with a circumference of more than three metres and roots extending above the ground like writhing snakes. Locals used to say that the tree was older than the town itself, and that whoever embraced the trunk at exactly midnight could hear whispers of the past.
That evening, fascinated by the legend, Ari, Kacper and Natasha decided to see how much truth there was in the stories. They brought torches, quietly crept through the bushes and sat under an oak tree, waiting for the ghostly hour. The air was sultry and strangely electric, as if the tree was indeed about to speak.
At exactly midnight, Natasha, the bravest of the three, pressed her palms against the bark and closed her eyes, laughing nervously. "I feel nothing but cobwebs," she muttered, when suddenly her hand disappeared into a gap between the roots. The girl froze.
"Did you see that?" Ari and Kacper walked closer, trying to understand how this could be possible. A dark, shimmering space appeared where there had only been ordinary earth a moment ago. For a moment, they saw blurred shapes in it - something like a street lit by pinkish lamps and strangely tall, moving shadows.
"Maybe we should ... go in?" Kacper, trembling, held out his hand, but Ari stopped him. "I don't think we should... But if we don't, we'll never know what's on the other side," she whispered.
Then a deafening whisper came from under the ground - a language they had never heard before, but which seemed strangely familiar. The oak leaned over them and the ground beneath their feet began to tremble slightly. The three teenagers looked at each other. As Kacper first dared to press against the root, which glowed blue, the fissure opened wider and the blinding light sucked them inside....
And then everything changed.
