Lena always had the strange feeling that the world around her was just a thin layer under which something more was hiding. These thoughts invaded her most often at three o'clock in the morning, when the ink-black night stretched beyond the window and her own breathing seemed too loud. That evening she was returning from a long meeting with friends on the old campus. The streets were empty, lanterns dragging their amber light across the wet cobblestones. Lena was walking slowly, gazing at the reflections of the lights in the puddles, when suddenly one of the reflections flashed unnaturally bright before her eyes. She stopped, looked more carefully. In the mirror of the puddle, right next to her foot, she saw something unusual - instead of her own reflection, she saw a completely different street, flooded with blue light and full of tall, silver figures. She bent down and touched the mirror of the water. Her fingers passed over the surface as if it were just a thin fabric. Seconds later, Lena felt the ground beneath her soften and she felt herself slowly sink into the depths. She felt like she was falling through layers of light and shadow, hearing whispers in unfamiliar languages around her. Finally, she landed carefully on a stone street. She looked around and froze in awe. She was in the middle of the City of Mirrors, a place she had only read about in the craziest novels. Tall towers with walls of polished metal reflected her own image endlessly. Shadows flitted between the buildings - some familiar, others completely alien. Suddenly, right next to her, a tall man in a long coat emerged from the darkness, his face a mere reflection of the city lights. He looked at Lena penetratingly and said: "I knew you would come one day. Now it's all up to you."
