Eye of Odin
The grey sky hung heavy over the fjord, and salty waves slapped against the shore, crashing against the stone cliffs. Deep in the icy valley of Henesfjord, the settlement of Skogheim bustled with life. The Vikings were preparing for the coming winter - loading dried fish into barrels, sharpening axes and telling each other stories by the crackling fire. On this night, however, the usual tales were not told. Silence reigned, broken only by the hooting of owls and the rustling of the wind.
Bjorn, one of the younger warriors, sat away from the others, playing with the wolf-shaped amulet his father had given him. He had a thirst for adventure in his blood, but also a desire to explore the unknown. When his brother Sven challenged him to a night of fishing, he wriggled out under the pretext of a headache. In reality, something was drawing him towards the forest, which the village elders spoke of with reluctance.
"Do not venture into the forest north of the settlement," Bjorn's mother repeated. "There, even the sun is afraid to shine." But Bjorn saw tiny black feathers in the compost and the remnants of strange bones he found near the border of the thicket. Something had to be there.
When everyone had fallen asleep, Bjorn was awakened by the pounding of his own heart and an unbridled curiosity. He covered himself with his fur, grabbed his axe and set off along the path to the north. The forest stood quiet, but footprints in the snow betrayed that someone or something had traversed the path before him. The further he walked, the thicker the fog became. Bjorn shuddered as he felt someone's gaze on the back of his neck. Then he heard whispers - not words, but the sensation that someone wanted to lead him deeper into the darkness.
Eventually, he reached a clearing where a single, old tree with splayed branches grew. On one of the branches, a black raven was looking at him with unusual intensity. A blue light flashed in its eye. Bjorn raised his hand, and in the same instant all the mist swirled around the clearing, revealing the outline of a ruined temple, covered with runes.
Suddenly, creeping footsteps came from behind the trees, and Bjorn felt the ground beneath his feet begin to tremble....
