Echoes under a dark blue bridge

Echoes under a dark blue bridge
The town of Gawrony was no different from the hundreds of other towns scattered around the country. There was a high school smelling of chalk and dust, a park overgrown with wild mint, a hairdressing shop run by Mrs Danuta. But on the outskirts, just beyond the line of faded blocks of flats, rose a dark blue bridge that everyone had heard about but no one wanted to talk about. In the evenings, the bridge seemed darker than the rest of the world, and the echoes beneath it echoed quietly, as if someone had been whispering unchanged words for years. Julian was seventeen years old and had just finished his second year of high school. He was more of a loner type, but he shared a strange bond with Iga, a sixteen-year-old with blue hair - as if they were double reflections in a tarnished mirror. They both felt that their emotions had more shades than school textbooks could accommodate. It was a sultry June night, of the kind that makes the air ripple over the tarmac. Iga was waiting for Julian on a bench by the old playground. When he appeared, she pressed a silver key into his hand - a find from her great-grandfather's cellar. The lights of the distant city were reflected in the key. - Would you like to see something that scares you? - She asked without smiling. - Only if we go together,' he replied, feeling a pulsing in his temples. As they walked through the deserted streets, they talked about what they feared most. Iga confessed that she was panicky about forgetting, Julian about losing control of his emotions. That night they both tested their fears. The bridge loomed amidst the mists hovering over the river. At its concrete support they discovered a metal door - someone had recently stuck a note on it: "Another world begins here". Igi's key fitted without resistance. The door gave way with a groan, and a chill gushed from inside. They stood at the entrance, and it echoed off the wet walls, producing sounds from the depths that resembled laughter and crying at the same time. Julian felt goosebumps; Iga squeezed his hand so hard it hurt. A barely visible light flashed from the dark depths in the distance, and their own emotions began to seem stranger than ever before. For the moment, neither of them knew what was real and what had been created in their heads. The echo spoke again - this time more clearly, calling out one of their names....
