Echoes of the Storm over the North
The sea hummed, crashing against the shore as if talking to the sky. Above the island of Skjoldung, dawn was broiling, and fog drifted lazily between the cliffs. Siegfried leaned against the drakkar's mast, feeling a tingling in his fingers. This was no ordinary day - the whole village knew that the expedition he was about to embark on with his friends would change everything.
Also on board with Siegfried were Astrid, the blacksmith's daughter who never left home without her dagger, and Grim, the fisherman's son, known for his foul tongue and gift for stories. Each of them was 17 years old and had hearts full of a hunger for adventure, but neither knew what lay beyond the horizon line. The village had been alive for weeks with news of an unusual light that shone over the northern island. No one had the courage to find out what had caused it - except the three of them.
As the sun stood tall and Skjoldung disappeared behind their backs, the waves began to beat harder and harder, and wild seagulls appeared around the boat, circling above them like harbingers of something unknown. Grim joked that the seagulls were the souls of warriors who guarded the secrets of the sea, but Astrid only shrugged her shoulders and squeezed the cord even tighter around the hilt of her dagger.
A storm was coming. Siegfried struggled to distinguish the boundary between sea and sky - both planes frosted furiously with navy blue and grey. For a couple of hours they fought the wind, until finally a dark land blurred on the horizon. It had to be the northern island, their destination. But as they approached the shore, it became apparent that this was no ordinary rock. Strange, huge stone structures protruded from the sea - looking as if they had been erected here by someone a very long time ago.
Astrid jumped ashore first, alert as ever, followed by Siegfried and Grim. The stones were covered with strange markings they had never seen before, not even in their father's sagas. As Grim moved his hand over one of them, the air around them shook and a deafening sound cut through the silence.
"What was that?" - whispered Astrid, looking at the shaking ground.
At that moment, a thick mist descended upon them with sudden force, and from within the stone circles emerged a figure that was unrecognisable in the milky veil. Siegfried reached for his axe, his heart pounding like a hammer. Would they return home with new knowledge, or would they become another legend told around the campfire through the long winter nights? It was all to be decided in a moment they could no longer avoid.
