Echoes of the Star Nebula
As the Solaris-5 spacecraft left Saturn's orbit, the crew felt the tension that only comes when Earth's reality is left far over the horizon. There were five of them - the captain Lena Kowalczyk, the restless engineer Darek, the idealistic astrobiologist Yuna, the calm pilot Marek and the taciturn astrophysicist Tom.
The days passed in routine experiments and observations of stellar phenomena, until one night the sensors picked up something unusual: a radio signal whose frequency did not match any known form of communication. It resembled the squawk of a bird mixed with the hum of an icy nebula.
- 'It must be a bug,' muttered Darek, glancing at the wavy line on the screen. - 'Or someone's having a lot of fun with a cosmic joke.
Yuna immediately countered: - 'But the wave profile is too regular for random noise. It's something ... intentional. Perhaps another civilisation?
Solaris-5 approached the source of the signal. Behind the porthole stretched the beautiful Blue Nebula. Its ethereal light permeated the interior of the ship, casting fantastic shadows on the walls of the laboratories. The signal was intensifying. Tom picked out layer after layer of it - some mathematically ordered, others completely chaotic.
Everyone converged on the main cockpit. An image appeared on the screens: dark, shimmering shapes were emerging from the nebula. Lena swallowed her saliva. - This can't be... it's alive?
- 'I'm getting an answer,' Marek whispered, analysing the growing stream of data. - Someone... something is responding to our signals. It loves the number pi. It's changing it, as if... playing with us.
Then a pulsating flash shook the entire cabin. The ship's systems began to go crazy. The airlock door opened spontaneously. The voice of the synthesiser trembled:
- Don't come any closer... This is no place for humans.
The Solaris-5 crew looked at each other. In the flickering streaks of the nebula, a silhouette, as if made up of light and shadow, was looming. She waited for them to make a decision...
