Echoes of the Future: Chrononauts Club
The town of Novigrad had its secrets, but the biggest one was hidden in the eerily quiet, abandoned observatory on the hill. This place, shiver-inducing even on sunny days, has always attracted daredevils seeking thrills. But only a few visited it after dark.
On a June evening, four friends - Lena, Adaś, Hubert and Maks - gathered at the observatory gate. Hubert's torchlight danced on the old stone as he moved it over the faded inscription: "Institute for Temporal Research. Year 1912."
- 'Seriously, it's just an old legend,' sighed Maks, 'We won't find anything here.
- Or we'll just find something that no one has seen before - replied Lena, glancing at the rusting door.
After a moment of deliberation, they went inside. Cobwebs dangled from the ceiling, glass crunched underfoot. Suddenly, Adaś came across a metal panel hidden under a thick layer of dust. He moved his hand and... the panel flashed with a pale light. Flashing symbols and incomprehensible numbers appeared on the surface.
- It must be a computer, an old computer! - remarked Adaś excitedly.
- But how is it working after all these years? - whispered Lena.
Little did they know that they were setting something much more in motion. In an instant the air thickened, the ever-present silence was broken by a low, mechanical sound. The door closed with a bang. A vortex of luminous lines emerged from the alcove and enveloped the friends. They felt as if their bodies were becoming light, floating in the air, while at the same time everything around them was spinning at a frenetic speed.
When they finally sank back to solid ground, they realised that the surroundings had changed beyond recognition. Young trees were growing around the observatory, fresh buildings and elegantly dressed people could be seen everywhere. At the foot of the hill, automobiles looked as if they were from old films. Jazz was playing from a radio on a neighbouring bench.
- Did we... just travel back in time? - Hubert asked quietly.
- Impossible - said Maks, but the view outside the window contradicted his words.
The friends looked around and saw a mysterious figure in a cylinder watching them intently from a distance of a few metres. She was holding a notebook in her hand and writing something fiercely in it. When their gazes met, the stranger nodded and signaled for them to follow him.
Before anyone had time to react, the sound of police sirens rang out around them and someone shouted orders through a megaphone...
