Echoes of the City of Night
The night in Solaris was thick as ink, silent, punctuated only by the noise of a city that never slept. On the roof of an old building on Comet Avenue, four teenagers sat in a circle, gazing out at the street lit up by the lights.
Mila once again drew in the cool air, trying to calm her beating heart. Life here - among the glass skyscrapers, the constant rush - was stressful enough. Lately, however, too many strange things had been happening to be ignored. Her left hand unconsciously flashed a blue light, and she tried to hide it from passers-by far below.
- Anyone else get a strange message today? - asked Leander more quietly than usual, running his finger across the screen of his old phone. Everyone nodded, almost simultaneously pulling crumpled cards from their pockets and opening unread messages. On all of them was the same, simple text: "Meet me at the Crooked Roof at midnight. You have it in you. Time to awaken the power before it's too late. - X".
- Is this some kind of joke? - laughed Iga nervously, trying not to look at her reflection in the dusty glass. No one spoke, and she squeezed the paper in her hand. Kris's arm twitched slightly - again, he was trying to hide the fact that ever since he had crossed his sixteenth birthday, he had been able to move objects with his mind. - How do they know? - he whispered.
Leander looked at Milia and then into the darkness beyond the edge of the roof. - 'It's not a coincidence. Someone is watching us. We need to find out who 'X' is and what he wants from us. Otherwise...
At that moment, a strong gust of wind came off the side of the abandoned ventilation shaft. Everyone jumped up, and electricity ran down their spines. A cloaked figure emerged from the shadows. In her hand she held a device that flicked dangerously with red light. For a moment there was complete silence. Then they heard a voice, quiet and mechanical:
- You already know that you are different. But are you sure you are ready to pay the price for your powers?
Threat and mystery hung in the air. A moment in which each of them had to decide whether to step forward or run away....
