Did You Know?

Echoes of Pulsar

Echoes of Pulsar
The Orion spacecraft drifted through dark blue darkness, where the starlight was as sharp as needles and the silence as thick as fog. On the bridge, Captain Lena Sikor watched the mesmerising dance of meteorites outside the panoramic window. Sitting next to her was Arjun, an engineer and explorer, readied in the code of the navigation systems. Deep inside the ship, pilot Yoko tried to sleep, but the quivering energy in the midst of the endless night kept her awake. Their mission? To cross the boundary of the known universe and see if there really was something more beyond the Gorgon nebula. Everything was going according to plan until the radio picked up a short, repetitive pulse. The signal came on suddenly, snapping the crew out of their routine. It was three short beeps and a long pause, suspended somewhere outside the known channels of communication. - 'I don't think it's a coincidence,' whispered Arjun, tracing the wave on the screen. - The signal is coming from beyond the boundary of our map. From a place where, according to the indicators, there should be nothing.... Except emptiness. Lena felt a shiver of anxiety, but curiosity at the same time. She pressed a button on the control board, putting the ship into standby mode. Yoko appeared in the doorway, with obvious tension in her eyes. - 'In an hour we'll be exactly where the signal is coming from,' she announced. - Should we go there? Maybe... it's someone calling us. The ship swept through the swirling space dust. A shape appeared on the navigation screen. Clearly unnatural. The crew held their breath as a solitary black planet appeared to their eyes, its surface pulsating with a light identical to a coded signal. For a brief moment it seemed that something or someone was watching Orion from within the planet. - 'Captain, what do we do? - Arjun asked, trying to hide the tremor in his voice. Even Lena wasn't sure if what they saw was a work of nature or an an invitation. The ship's scanners suddenly began to go crazy, and the radio picked up a new sequence of pulses. Everything indicated that they were just on the verge of a discovery that could change the course of their mission - and their lives. At that moment, the first mysterious mark appeared on the ship's outer plating, imprinted by an unknown energy....
