Echoes from beyond Mars

Echoes from beyond Mars
In the year 2146, the Martian colony was bustling with activity, but the busiest area was the experimental cultivation district. That's where Lena, a seventeen-year-old scientist, was overseeing the trial cultivation of Earth fruit under an artificial dome. She was tasked with monitoring the humidity sensors and oxygen levels in Zone 7, right next to the old communication shaft. When her friend Maks, a scatterbrained technician, ran into the lab, he was holding a tablet with diagrams full of disturbances. - 'Lena, look at this! - he shouted, showing the flashing lines. - The radio system is picking up something strange. These are not our transmissions. Lena took a closer look. The signal repeated itself every ten minutes or so. Or a message from ... someone from outside? Maks smiled broadly: - You're not thinking of... outsiders, are you? Before they could work out anything, the signal changed. The graph line began to resemble a scrambled sequence of numbers and letters, as if someone was trying to make contact. A soft, metallic voice came from the speaker: "Are you there?" Lena and Maks exchanged glances in which curiosity and anxiety mingled. In the darkness of the Martian evening, standing over the old radio station, they knew that something awaited them that they could not have predicted. Another message came from the loudspeaker, this time even clearer....
