Did You Know?

Echoes among the Walls of Rubinsky Palace

Echoes among the Walls of Rubinsky Palace
The night in Rubin Town was heavy with the smell of old brick and the lime aroma of the wind. Michal, Lena and Artur, although long since finished school, could not get rid of their childish curiosity. For them, returning to their hometown was like entering an unopened box full of old secrets. That evening, they were sitting on a bench opposite the Rubinsky Palace - a red brick building with tall windows that had been scaring passers-by with its emptiness and legends for years. - Do you dare to go in? - chuckled Lena, peering through the overgrown fence. Michael shrugged his shoulders. Arthur smiled curtly, casting a shadow as if he were the hero of his own tale. Everyone knew that no one really felt like going in there. But the night fuelled imagination, and youth fuelled courage. Nettles tickled their calves as they jumped over the hole-punched netting. Clouds obscured the moon, and the old door made a deafening groan as Lena pushed it open. The middle of the palace smelled of dust and damp, each step echoing as if someone unseen was walking right behind them. In one of the rooms, Arthur spotted a staircase leading down, under the floor. On the wall hung a painting, depicting a man with red eyes. Lena sent Michael a nervous smile. - 'They say there are things going on here that... - she began, but her voice was muffled by a sound, as if something vibrated behind the wall. They walked down the creaking stairs, holding their breath. When they reached the bottom, a heavy metal door, decorated with carvings depicting fantastic animals, awaited them. A ruby glittered in the middle of the door. Arthur touched it and at the same moment the air trembled. The entire interior began to ripple and the paintings on the walls shimmered and blurred into a colourful mosaic of infinite possibilities. There was a silence as thick as fog. When they finally opened their eyes, the palace no longer resembled a ruin. Luminous fish floated from the ceiling, and dragon shadows crept along the smooth walls. From inside the chamber came a quiet beating - as if the heart of the palace had just awoken. - 'Are you guys...' began Michael, but suddenly a voice that neither of them knew rang out from the depths of the room: - Who dared to cross the threshold of the Imagination?....
