Echo on the Roofs of the City
Darkness was beginning to spread over the city when Lena once again slipped out onto the roof of the old townhouse. She liked this place - high, almost adjacent to the clouds, from where the world looked different: quieter, as if sheltered by a soft blanket of twilight. Between the aerials and the heated chimneys, she felt not only invisible, but also free from other people's expectations. Here she could be herself, without pretence, without filter.
That evening, Lena was full of conflicting emotions. The image of her last conversation with her friend, which had shattered into sharp shards of anger and misunderstanding, echoed in her head. She was terrified by the hurricane of her own feelings - anger, sadness, guilt and, above all, the unbearable loneliness that dragged her down like an invisible weight.
She sat on the edge of the roof, hanging her legs over the city lights. She listened to her accelerated breathing when she suddenly realised that she was not alone here.
A few metres away, on a neighbouring roof, a figure appeared. A boy, not much older than Lena by eye, was walking slowly, carefully placing his steps on the moving tiles. There was something strangely familiar about his silhouette, although she couldn't remember ever seeing him here before. He nodded to her and sat down opposite, sharing the awkward silence with her.
For a moment they looked at each other in silence. Then Lena felt something begin to change. The roof on which they were sitting trembled slightly, and the wind carried with it not only the smell of the night city, but also quiet whispers - as if the tiles themselves were trying to tell their stories. Strands of her hair danced in the air, lifted by an unexpected gust.
The boy smiled slightly, gazing into the street lights, and suddenly said: "Sometimes the rooftops hear more than we think. Especially when we feel something really strongly."
Lena felt the tension build up; her thoughts whirled - did this boy know something about her? How had things become so strangely electric around her, as if emotions were thickening in the air? She had a feeling that any moment something would happen that she would not be able to undo.
Suddenly there was a bang - as if something heavy had hit the sheet metal of the roof two buildings away. Lena broke off, her heart pounding like crazy. The boy fell silent, and the twilight was brightened by the light beaming from under a small window at the top of the neighbouring house. Somewhere out there, behind the glass, someone was moving....
In that moment, Lena had to decide whether to move towards the light and face what was waiting for her there, or whether to go back to her own place and leave everything behind.
