Echo in the Grey Town
The Grey City has always been a place where it's better not to ask too many questions. Ever since superpowers were banned, everyone who still had them had either disappeared or learned to hide their abilities better than their own fear. Lena thought she was one of those ordinary, average teenagers who, by their existence, do not attract the attention of any monitoring system.
Everything changed that August afternoon when, after an argument with her mother, she ran out of the house, wanting a break from the world. Her feet took her by themselves to an abandoned factory on Brick Street - a place where even the bravest people stopped in mid-step. Lena had never been here before, although she had heard stories about strange sounds and flashing lights after dusk.
Inside, the silence was so thick that it hurt her ears. The air smelled of rust and dust, and every step made old screws or broken glass crunch under her shoes. Lena wandered between the columns for a while, until a huge mural on a dilapidated wall caught her eye. There were painted figures swirling in spiral patterns, and one of them had a face that Lena knew. Her own.
She froze. Her heart began to beat faster. Staring at the figure, she felt a strange tingling in her fingers. Suddenly, the lights in the factory dimmed, as if someone had closed the blinds on every window at once. Lena turned around abruptly, then heard something that could hardly be called a voice-barely an echo of her own whisper echoing off all the walls: "Time to wake up."
Suddenly, the mural flared, and Lena felt as if a wave of energy surged through her body, making all her senses sharpen to their limits. A figure in a dark cloak emerged from behind one of the pillars, wearing a mask with a lightning bolt symbol on its face.
"I knew you would come here, Lena. You are the last one who can change this." His voice was low, calm but full of tension.
Before Lena had time to reply or even think about running away, the light of the mural flashed even brighter and her hands began to tremble from an unimaginable force. Unspoken questions hung in the air and a premonition that in just a moment her world would change forever....
