Doors under the Winter Bridge

Doors under the Winter Bridge
The wind was tugging at the branches of the old willows by the Vistula Boulevards as Susanna returned from classes in the evening. It wasn't the first time she'd taken a short cut across the old, brick-built Dębnicki Bridge, but this evening she felt different - she glanced nervously at the black mirror of the Vistula, trying to control a disturbing feeling. Even though she was now an adult, the world seemed to expand behind a thick curtain of night air. Maybe it was the stress of the exam, or maybe something more? At the middle pillar of the bridge, under the red light of the lantern, she saw something unusual: an open door standing alone, completely out of keeping with its surroundings. Their old oak surface was decorated with iron rivets and ornaments, as if cut from another era or... reality. A warm amber light emanated from behind the door, and quiet laughter and the smell of warmed honey came through the crack. Susanna took out her phone to take a picture, but the screen went blank for a moment. Intrigued, she touched the door handle - it was warm. At that moment, her phone rang. It was Kuba, her friend from her year, wanting to meet up. With her heart pounding, Susanna asked him to come to the bridge. A few minutes later, they were standing together, looking at the door, which, it turned out, only they could see. - What if it was a passage ... to somewhere? - whispered Cuba, uncertainly turning the torch in his hand. - Maybe we shouldn't risk it, but.... since we're already here? They stared at each other through the evening twilight. When the door vibrated, it swung open wider, revealing a winding path bathed in orange light. On either side of the path, trees piled up, their leaves glinting with a silver-green glow, and somewhere further on, the sound of a harp could be heard. Susanna, with hesitation, stepped over the threshold. Kuba tugged at her sleeve, but it was too late - the light engulfed them both. Outside the door, the air tasted of honey and bark, and the sky pulsed with a strange, unearthly light. On the path, among the shadows, a figure in a cloak woven of leaves was waiting for them and nodded to them. Before they had time to speak, the door behind them slammed shut with a quiet clatter, and the path began to change - glowing symbols appeared beneath their feet, and a dragging voice came from the distance: - "You have decided to enter. Are you prepared to pay the price?" Susanna looked at Cuba, feeling her heart speed up. There was no turning back now.
