Doors on the Sixth Floor
The night on campus was quiet, interrupted only by the rustle of rain against the windows and the echo of laughter in the distance. Lena, Michael and Sarah were returning from a late seminar, carrying books and coffee cups under their arms. Each of them was tired, although none of them felt like sleeping yet. That's why, when they reached the sixth floor of the old dormitory, they stopped, startled by the sight of a disconcerting-looking heavy matt wood door that had never stood here before.
- 'Have you ever seen them before? - Lena asked, touching the cool handle. Michael shook his head, and Sara instinctively took a step back.
The door had no room number or business card. They were alien, as if incongruous with the rest of the corridor smelling of dust and oil paint. Lena looked at her friends expectantly, but before they had time to respond, the door... creaked open of its own accord.
Behind them was a staircase leading downwards, illuminated by a soft, pulsating light. From inside wafted the smell of wood and... chocolate?
- Perhaps it was some new part of the dormitory? Or a prank by the freshmen? - Michael tried to rationalise, but something in him told him not to trust his own words.
Silence fell for a long moment. Lena swallowed her saliva, then took the first step over the threshold. Sara and Michal, somewhat to their own surprise, ran right after her.
The staircase ended abruptly - and the three friends found themselves not in a cellar, but on the edge of a vast blue forest, sparkling with rays of unreal light. In the distance, between the trees, crystal towers and levitating islands glittered. The air resounded with neither music nor laughter.
Behind them, the door slammed silently. Michal turned around, but where the portal should have been, there were only old, moss-covered boulders.
- What now? - whispered Sara, as suddenly a shadow of a figure with shining eyes flitted among the trees. The mysterious stranger beckoned them with his hand, and the path began to glow with a slightly orange, pulsing light....
