Darkness behind the glass
It was early September and the evenings were getting colder. Lena, Maks and Igor were riding their bicycles through the forest, heading towards an old, disused railway station on the outskirts of town. The place had long been shrouded in rumour - strange sounds were said to be heard there at night, and some claimed that lights could flash from the windows of the empty building, even though no one had lived there for a long time.
Lena stopped first, looking at the neglected platforms and overgrown tracks.
- Do you really want to go inside? - She asked, pretending not to be terrified.
- Sure, after all, this is the kind of evening we wanted! - replied Maks, pulling out a torch. Igor remained silent, but for a moment there was a shadow of doubt in his eyes.
They strapped their bicycles on and approached the main entrance. The door was slightly ajar, although they all remembered that it had still been bolted in the morning. Lena felt a shudder. There was a poignant silence inside, disturbed only by the rustling of leaves falling through the broken windows. Shadows cast by the light of the torches were strewn across the walls.
On the platform, one could see the remains of old benches and a broken clock, stopped at 3:33 a.m. Someone had painted cursive letters on the wall that could not be read. Igor noticed them first.
- Hey, look at this! - he whispered. Lena took a closer look - the paint must have been fresh, because she could still smell its characteristic biting odour.
- After all, supposedly nobody comes here - she muttered.
Maks, wanting to reassure himself and his friends, jokingly suggested:
- 'All right, we'll make a round of the station and get back before the ghosts can eat us, okay?
They moved slowly through room after room. Suddenly, behind one of the doors in the depths of the corridor, they heard a quiet knocking, as if something or someone was hitting the glass. Lena stopped and froze. At the same moment, the light from Maks' torch fell on the glass in the side window. On the other side, on the unlit platform, there was a dark silhouette that should not have been there.
The friends held their breath. Igor felt his heart start to beat faster and faster. The shadow moved and then disappeared, as if it had vanished into thin air. There was a deafening silence. Outside, there was a long, disturbing sound, like the screeching of rails....
Lena was already about to say something when suddenly more noises rang out in the darkness, and lights began to flash somewhere in the depths of the building. Everyone looked at each other with wide-open eyes and realised that they were not alone here.
