Crossing the Irida
The sun was setting behind the forest line, colouring the town of Irida amber. In this light, the streets seemed mysteriously quiet, although the isolated sounds of summer evenings came from behind the fences. We sat on the roof of the old sports hall next to the school - me, Lena, Wojtek and Igor. We were four friends, united by a common sense of the suffocating stagnation of a small town where each day seemed to be a reflection of the previous one.
It was Wojtek who first told us about the old foundations under the forest. I listened without enthusiasm at the time - after all, everyone knew there was nothing interesting behind the fence of the former factory. Lena, who never believed in ghost stories or hidden treasures, this time could not hide her curiosity.
- Maybe we should go there tomorrow? - she threw, looking defiantly at Igor.
Igor, our electronics genius and a sure thing in any situation, smiled broadly. - If there's really something worth looking at there, I'll find it.
Saturday morning we slipped out of the houses. Our quiet intimidation turned into feverish excitement as we made our way through the dense thickets that tightly surrounded the site of the abandoned factory. Along the way, Igor smashed his old watch on a branch and Lena twisted her ankle - they both took this as a good sign. After an hour of walking, we reached the overgrown foundations.
Wojtek was right - the middle of the concrete slab was covered with a geometric mosaic of stones, as if someone had arranged them there on purpose. Lena knelt down and started to move her hand over the cool surface.
- I think this is... - she broke off when a blue light flashed from under the stones. We all jumped back. The mosaic trembled and then slowly began to disappear, revealing a dark opening. For a few seconds, we stared at the pulsating interior of the portal, in which colourful streaks swirled.
Igor, usually composed, pulled out his phone to record the whole event, but the display exploded with a series of coloured lines and went out.
- 'This is really happening,' whispered one of us. Air flowed through the portal with a strange smell - fresh, unearthly. For a moment no one dared to move.
- 'Maybe it's an entrance to another reality,' whispered Lena, her voice trembling with emotion.
Without thinking any longer, Wojtek leaned over the edge and disappeared into the blue abyss. For a split second we saw his silhouette blur in the light.
The three of us were left with our hearts beating like crazy. Suddenly, a sound came from inside the portal - Wojtek's voice, which had never sounded so unfamiliar before, echoed:
- Come... you have to see it!
We looked at each other. There was no turning back now. One by one, with our souls on our shoulders, we stepped into the vibrating light, not knowing where we would end up or what was waiting for us there....
