City under neon lights
As soon as the sun hid behind the glass skyscrapers of Neo-Warsaw, the city lit up with a thousand neon lights. Lena had always loved this sight. There was something mesmerising about the colours - pink, cobalt and indigo blue twinkled, reflecting in puddles on the pavements. It was here, in the Zeta district, that everything changed.
She was sitting on the roof of an old block of flats, suspended somewhere between the ordinary world and the world she had recently begun to belong to more and more. She was wearing a black sweatshirt that allowed her to blend in with the shadows, and glans that she wouldn't swap for any other shoes. She clutched the metal railing with her hands and felt a thrill of energy beneath her fingers, as if the steel was heated from the inside out.
For the past two weeks, everything seemed different. The phone stopped working when she got into a bad mood. Sometimes all she had to do was look at someone and a shadow would appear in their eyes, as if they were trying to remember something they had just missed.
Since, during an argument with her mother, the lamp in the kitchen broke into dozens of pieces without her touching it, Lena guessed that she was no longer the same person. But where to turn when you can't even trust your own thoughts? When she asked her best friend Janek if he had noticed anything strange about her, he looked at her, shrugged his shoulders and simply changed the subject.
On this particular night, Lena could no longer pretend that everything was fine. She looked out over the city centre, where the lights bloomed with a pulsating rhythm, and felt her heart begin to pound faster and faster. In the distance, just above the skyline of skyscrapers, someone was hovering in the air. A dark silhouette, almost transparent - only she could see it. Lena involuntarily clenched her fists and felt the air around her thicken, as if it was about to explode from electricity.
Was it possible that someone else...?
Suddenly the roof vibrated, as if someone had jumped over the railing behind her. Lena turned abruptly, ready to fight or flee. In the shadows stood a boy in a green coat, with blue light flickering under his skin. His eyes rested on her with alarming confidence.
- 'I've finally found you,' he said quietly.
Lena felt the world around her freeze. Behind her, the neon city danced with its own rhythm, unaware that just this night - on the edge of the ordinary and the extraordinary - she had made a decision that could change everything. The boy took a step towards her, and the air thickened even more....
