City to Whisper

City to Whisper
Lena dropped her rucksack on the floor of her rented flat at 7 Żurawia Street, rubbing her tired eyes. The wall clock, slightly crooked, had just struck twenty-three. At this hour, most of the windows in the old building were already dark, but Lena loved the nighttime silence - at least until yesterday. Yesterday, when she returned late from work, she heard something she thought she had predicted: a soft whispering sound coming from under the floor, as if the parquet floor had something to say. She ignored it and went to bed, blaming it on fatigue and too much coffee drunk in the afternoon. But today... Today she could no longer pretend that nothing was happening. In the kitchen, the kettle began to chirp quietly under its breath as she set the water. "You're back late again, Lena," he muttered, and she blinked, looking at the phone display. Instead of freaking out, she decided to ask a question: - What's going on in this flat? - 'It's not just a flat,' replied the voice, with a reverberation, as if it were coming from behind the wall. - 'We all have our stories here. Would you like to listen to them? Suddenly the light in the bathroom flicked on, and a crackling sound came from inside the radiator. A throaty laugh sounded from the room where the old antique sideboard stood. On the wall, next to the old tiles, the mirror fogged up, drawing a shape on the surface that resembled an outstretched hand. Lena sat down on the kitchen stool, pawing at her head. At that moment, she heard a familiar knock on the door - it was her friend Oskar. The one who was always smoking cigarettes on the balcony and chattering into his perishable bedside lamp. The girl looked through the peephole - Oskar looked more nervous than usual. In his hand he was holding a piece of an old radio, from which quiet words were coming out, although it was not plugged in. - 'You must see something else,' he whispered hurriedly, glancing behind him as if something was following him. - 'It involves the whole tenement. Everything here has started talking ... and what they're saying ... doesn't bode well. At that moment, the lights went out in the flat and Lena felt a chill spreading down her back. Right next to her, the tap began to sob quietly, the cupboard creaked, and the echo of the radio's last word spread through the flat. Everyone held their breath, uncertain of what would happen next....
