At school, Olive was always told that her greatest treasures were knowledge and courage. It's funny, because it was these two things that she lacked the most when she, together with Maximilian and Zoska, stood at the gate of the abandoned orangery. Everyone had heard rumours of strange lights seen at night among the rusted pillars and glass domes, but they were the only ones who decided to see what was hidden behind the cobwebbed windows. There was a slightly acidic smell in the air of decaying leaves and something unnamed, as if time itself had lost its rhythm here. Maks, the bravest of the three, pressed on the ajar gate. Here, even the echoes sounded different - they whispered softly, bouncing off the broken pots and metal constructions. Zosia squeezed Olive's hand, and she felt her heart go up to her throat. Under the orangery's vaulted ceiling, a bright glow suddenly danced among the shadows. The three teenagers stopped motionless, watching as the light slid down the branch of an old ficus tree and opened a kind of narrow gap in the air. On the other side, a completely different landscape loomed: a shimmering lake with strange, unfamiliar birds hovering over it and blue-purple grass covering the hills. Maks spoke up in a whisper: "Do you see the same thing I do?" Zosia nodded, not taking her eyes off the pulsating gap. Olive herself wasn't sure whether she felt more fear or fascination. Drawn in by the unmistakable aura of mystery, they moved closer. Then the light flared more strongly and the rift began to widen. The reality around them shimmered, as if several worlds were overlapping. On the other side, something - or someone - moved violently, casting a long, slender shadow on the border of the portal. Suddenly they felt something gently pulling them towards the gap. They could not take their eyes off the mysterious landscape, and the air vibrated pleasantly, as if inviting them to enter....
