Did You Know?

Behind the Last Door

Behind the Last Door
Lena always said that there was no better place to get lost than the old tenements on Zelazna Street. Their corridors smelled of dust and their brass doorknobs bore the marks of generations of hands. Where others saw only falling plaster and nests of pigeons, Lena and Paweł found the inspiration and peace they so lacked in the daily chaos. That Thursday evening, just after class, when the sun was already hiding behind the red roofs, Lena persuaded Paul to go on a little hike. "I have a feeling!" - she said with a smile and ran towards the oldest staircase of this part of the city. Paul, used to her endless ideas, just rolled his eyes and set off after her. They covered floor after floor, stopping at windows behind which the world looked as if it had frozen in time. On the top floor, Lena noticed something strange: in the wall between the two flat doors was another, much older door, almost invisible under the layer of wallpaper. They had a heavy steel handle and a motif of intricately entwined latticework. "Have you ever seen them?" - she asked in a whisper. Paul shook his head. The door looked like it had no right to be there. Lena couldn't stand it and grabbed the handle. The mechanism made a quiet crack and the door, creaking, opened slowly. Beyond the threshold stretched a space that simply could not be there: a starry night, lit up by a thousand tiny lights strung between the trees, and the air was warm and smelled of something completely alien - like lavender mixed with smoke and a hint of ozone. Without a word, Lena stepped over the threshold and Paul followed her. As soon as the door closed behind them, the world they knew disappeared, and before their eyes stretched an unfamiliar landscape, across which figures with luminous eyes flitted. Suddenly, a tall man with a fox mask over his face emerged from behind a nearby tree. He stopped in front of them and said in a low, melodious voice: "I have been waiting for you...".
