Atlas of Invisible Roads
Zosia stayed after lessons in the quiet, dust-smelling library. Ms Krystyna asked her to sort the atlases in the oldest cupboard. When Zosia opened the creaky door, something rustled like a dry sheet of paper. On the shelf lay an atlas without a signature, tied with string and ribbon. On the cover was the inscription: "Atlas of Invisible Roads". Zosia's fingers tingled strangely from violent curiosity.
Zosia sat down by the window and untied the string very carefully. The pages smelled of smoke, salt and something like the wind after a storm. On one page was a map of a familiar town, but not quite. The streets rippled and the river widened its bed like a smile. In the town square, instead of the town hall, a gate rose from the lines themselves. The line of the door glowed faintly, as if calling out by name. "Hello?" - whispered Zosia and hesitated to close the atlas. The gate glowed brighter and a sentence appeared in the margin. "Enter only with the key words, otherwise you will disappear in a half-step."
Zosia glanced at the library door, but the corridor was empty. "The word key..." she repeated, searching for a clue between drawings and small print. By the paste-up she found a pocket, and in it a paper bookmark. On the bookmark was a string of words: "Stone, shadow, shadow, trunk...". Zosia blinked and felt a slight shiver under her skin. The letters jumped and arranged themselves differently, as if they were dancing. It blew from the window, though the air should have stood still. The atlas clattered as if it had unlocked a lock under the thick skin. The gate on the map opened and revealed the movement of the street. She heard bells, footsteps and something like laughter carried through the echoes. Someone from the other side stopped exactly opposite her window. A shadow leaned towards the paper and whispered a single word. Zosia had known it forever, though she did not know from where. At the same moment, the handle of the real library door vibrated.
