At night under the Iron Bridge
The silence was so thick it could have been sliced with a knife as Adam and Lena stood by the railing of the old iron bridge. At the foot of the city, on the bank of a deserted river, surrounded only by the lighted windows of foggy tenements, they watched the water, which seemed almost black by the glow of the lanterns.
This was not the first time they had come here. In recent times, the bridge had attracted them with strange noises, which, as it turned out later, came neither from nocturnal birds nor from rats. They appeared periodically, about every week, always at the same time.
On the night before, Adam was sure he had seen something more. Silhouettes moving in the darkness under the bridge - too big for hedgehogs, too agile for dogs. And Lena... Lena always saw something in everything that others didn't.
- Do you hear that? - she whispered when something sloshed in the water.
Adam nodded his head. He slowly pulled out the torch, but Lena stopped him with a hand gesture.
- 'No,' she muttered. - 'Better not to scare them off with the light.
So they sat down on the wet concrete and waited. The smell of iron and damp filled their lungs. Suddenly, first a pair of shining eyes emerged from under the bridge, then a second and a third. Silhouettes were emerging from the darkness. They were animals, but of a kind they had never seen before. They had shiny, damp fur and their movements were fluid and graceful. The largest of them had an old, frayed scarf around its neck.
Lena grabbed Adam's hand and together they held their breath. The animals began to pile something on the ground. Crates, tins and pieces of rags were arranged in a certain shape. Something that resembled... a map?
Then the largest animal raised its head and looked straight at them. For a brief, intense moment, Adam was sure he saw something human in those eyes - as if an invitation, as if a warning.
The silence was cut by a protracted swish. Someone or something was approaching with a quick step across the wet sands under the bridge. The animals froze. Lena felt her heart pounding like mad, and Adam struggled to stop himself from screaming.
What were they supposed to do? Hide, or stay and watch? The lantern lights suddenly dimmed and a strange energy hung in the air....
