The city was lively even after dark, but the City Park was completely different at night than during the day. Simon, Lena and Igor knew this perfectly well, but that night they decided to sneak out of the house to see if the rumours of strange noises being heard just after midnight were true. They crept behind the old gazebo that all the locals were talking about. Lena pressed her finger to her lips and commanded silence as the silhouette of a cat flashed through the darkness. But it was no ordinary cat. It was wearing a mini backpack and something that looked like a small watch on its paw. ‘Have you seen this?’ whispered Igor, not hiding his excitement. Simon nodded, watching the animal disappear behind the dense bushes. The three friends crept after it, trying not to make any noise. Soon they spotted a pale light beaming from under an old oak tree. Under the tree, representatives of different species had gathered: hedgehogs, squirrels, cooties and even an owl, which seemed to be the leader of the gathering. The animals were exchanging strange objects, whispering among themselves and casting anxious glances towards the cloth-covered cage set up in the middle of the clearing. Lena swallowed her saliva and reflexively grabbed Simon’s hand. ‘What’s going on here?’ she whispered. At that moment, an owl raised its wing and silenced those gathered. ‘Dear members of the Discovery Night Club,’ she began, ‘the time has come to make the most important decision in our history…’ But before she could finish speaking, someone behind the children rustled the leaves. The three friends looked behind them and… they saw a pair of glowing eyes in the darkness, slowly approaching them.
