Did You Know?

Among the Agitated Timelines

Among the Agitated Timelines
Warsaw pulsated with June evening light. Adam gazed through the dirty windows of an old tenement whose walls still remembered the pre-war era. If it hadn't been for the challenge thrown down by Maja, he would probably never have ventured into this forgotten place. The old staircase creaked under their steps. Adam glanced at his watch: 7:13 p.m. Staring at the screens, the teenager, who usually avoided all the "wildness" of the city, today felt he needed a break from everyday life. And Maja? She was very different - impulsive, perpetually hungry for adventure, curious to the extreme. "Do you remember what old Witek from the ground floor said? Apparently there's a room on the top floor that no one has opened for decades," Maja whispered, leading Adam higher and higher. The third floor. The narrow corridor ended in a door, distinctly different from the others - heavy, with metal fittings, covered in a rusty tarnish. Adam pushed the handle hesitantly. It creaked, though the door gave way without resistance. The room was murky, lit only by a streak of light breaking through a dusty window. In the middle stood a strange object - it resembled a huge mechanical clock or a cross between a piano and control panels straight out of a science fiction film. It was covered with carvings and levers, and the tabletop displayed numbers that changed without any logic. Maja approached first. "It looks like something that could transport us.... anywhere," she joked, but there was a note of excitement in her voice. Adam noticed the date engraved on one of the panels: 1944. Next to it was a lever, wide, heavy, just asking to be moved. "Oi, maybe not after all..." began Adam, but Maja had already grabbed the lever and was pulling it with a force worthy of an Olympic athlete. The room shook, the world outside the window swirled and the clock on the panel went crazy. The sounds from outside fell silent, the light went out, and a deafening, pulsing sound came from the depths of the device. For a moment, nothing happened. Adam looked at Maja, who had gone pale. Suddenly, everything around them became a blur, and they realised that they were no longer standing in a dilapidated room on the third floor of a Warsaw tenement, but in a place they had not known a moment before - a courtyard full of soldiers in old uniforms, rifles and a deafening rumble. Adam heard behind him: 'Who are you? Where did you come from!" A stranger, a boy with a short haircut, was pointing a gun at them. Everything was happening too fast, hearts were beating like crazy and the heat of the June evening had given way to the cool breeze of another era. Before they had time to respond, the shrill sound of a siren came from behind the walls. Maja grabbed Adam's hand and the courtyard exploded into chaos. They had to decide whether to flee or try to convince the soldiers who they were, having no idea what era and place they were in....
