Did You Know?

Across the Threshold of the Last Station

Across the Threshold of the Last Station
The silence on the platform was almost palpable, as if each wave of wind stopped here for a moment to listen to the echoes of old stories. Ada, Karol and Leon gazed at the rusting rails over which the web of time stretched. The place used to be bustling with life - now only the footprints of shoes reflected in the dust and the tarnished notices on the shattered sign remained. Even though it was past midnight, neither of them dared to suggest going back. For the past weeks, the whole school had been talking about the strange lights that had appeared at the abandoned railway station. Legends had it that on the night of a full moon, you could find a train there that was not subject to the laws of reality - one that took passengers to places they had never dreamed of. "If you're scared, no one will hold it against you," chuckled Leon, but his voice trembled slightly. Ada looked around uncertainly - the gleam in her eyes, however, betrayed more excitement than fear. Charles, with his eternal calm, simply shrugged his shoulders and moved towards the rusty door leading inside the station. They hung torches on strings to keep their hands free. The lights vibrated, casting fanciful, moving shadows on the walls. There was a stifling stuffiness inside, as if the air had not been aired for decades. The main room of the station was filled with rows of wooden benches, surprisingly well-preserved. Someone had left a notebook with a torn cover on one of them. Ada grabbed it carefully and opened it to a random page. The notes were irregular, full of drawings of clocks and strange symbols, and one word repeated between the lines: "threshold". "This must be some kind of joke...?" whispered Leon, but then they heard a long, metallic groan from the platform - as if a weight had suddenly appeared on the rails. They looked through the dirty window. Where a moment ago there had been only empty space, now the outline of an old, black train was drawn in the moonlight. The carriage door opened of its own accord with a quiet slam. Without a word, they looked at each other. Each of them felt the same: they must cross the threshold. Or is this what someone has been expecting here for a long time? They took the first step towards the unknown, uncertain of what they would find on the other side of the carriage, which appeared out of nowhere, at night, when the lights - and the mysteries - do not sleep.
