Across the Threshold Between Worlds
The sky above the city looked as if someone had spilled ink on it and smeared blue over garnet with their fingers. In the abandoned Visio cinema, footsteps could be heard long after dark. Lena, Igor and Victor stood in the middle of the auditorium, measuring torch light aimed at the huge, dusty screen. From the outside, the building looked like a relic of the past, but it had tempted them for months.
- 'For the last time, I ask, are you going in? - Lena looked over her shoulder at the guys, and her voice echoed off the empty seats.
- 'I'm all for it if we can find the treasure,' Victor replied, trying to give his voice a certainty, although he himself clutched the lighter in his hand as if to scare away something invisible with it.
Igor ran his fingers over the wall covered with posters of old films. - 'After all, it's just an old movie, not a horror film,' he muttered, but each of them felt that something was different that night.
A thick curtain lay on the floor by the screen. Lena noticed a pattern of faded stars on its edge. She bent down and pushed the heavy material away. Underneath were strange symbols scrawled in chalk - circles, lines and swirls, just like the instructions to a board game that no one knew.
- Who had done this? - Victor asked, feeling a shiver run up the back of his neck.
Before Lena could answer, the screen began to glow. Not faintly, as if someone had turned on a light, but intensely, as if it were a gateway to another place. The air thickened and swirling spirals of colour appeared on the screen. Igor took a step back.
- 'It looks like a ... a portal - he whispered, cursing that they had let themselves be persuaded to go on this trip after all.
Lena took a step forward, attracted by the movement of the colours. Victor touched her arm, but she was as if by magic. The screen, on the other hand, pulsed with light, and the law of gravity suddenly ceased to operate in the room - dust floated in the air and the seats rose slightly. The three teenagers heard a strange voice from the depths of the screen that sounded like the whispering of hundreds of people at once:
- Cross the threshold. Just once.
They all looked at each other. Should they answer the call? What awaits on the other side? Lena had already lifted her foot and extended her hand towards the illuminated screen....
