A star under the table
On Christmas Eve, Hania and Kuba helped their mother. A white tablecloth and hay were waiting on the table. The house smelled of gingerbread, cinnamon and tangerines. The Christmas tree stood by the window and twinkled. Only the golden star had disappeared from the very top. Hania sighed quietly and looked at the tip. - 'Without the star it's not that,' she said in a whisper. Kuba knelt down and looked under the sofa in the living room. He saw only dust and small blocks. Suddenly, a quiet buzzing sound came from under the table. The sound was like a sleigh bell, very close. The tablecloth rippled slightly, as if breathing quietly. - Can you hear it now? - asked Kuba quietly. Hania nodded and quietly crouched down. She saw a bright streak of light on the floor. The streak wandered between shoes and chairs. She stopped by a bowl of poppies. Something flashed between the crumbs of the white wafer. - Maybe it was a star that escaped under the table,' she whispered. The sound rang again, a little louder, right next to her. The tablecloth lifted like a curtain, but no one was holding it. The children took a very deep breath all at once. Hania reached out under the table and touched....
