A skylight in your pocket
Holidays in Piotrowice were always a bit dull. Lena knew well the rusty-red bench in front of her grandmother's house, the overgrown garden full of cornflowers and the smell of drying laundry wafting from over the fence. Everything seemed slow here, predictable, like an endless afternoon dream.
One day, during a downpour, Lena hid in an old attic. She approached a shelf where forgotten items had been dusting for years. At the very end, hidden under a rolled-up jumper, lay a strange, thick piece of glass. It was slightly greenish and pulsed with a soft light, as if it hid a small skylight inside. Lena touched the glass and felt a slight tingling in her fingers.
At the same moment, the light bulb in the attic went out. The girl stood motionless for a moment, listening to the sound of the rain. As her eyesight became accustomed to the darkness, she noticed that the light from the piece of glass became clearer. She slowly moved her finger across its surface and she saw the shadows of houses, trees, people - miniature moving images of the street outside the window - glide across the glass. Every detail was surprisingly clear. Lena even found herself standing at the wicket and waving to someone unseen.
Fascinated, she began turning the glass in her hands. The images changed - as if she were looking through a window into another world hidden in the everyday. She was about to call her grandmother when suddenly a quiet rustling sound came from behind the dresser. She quickly put the glass in her pocket. Her heart was pounding like a hammer. Someone, or something, was coming towards her across the creaking attic floor. Lena held her breath and slipped deeper into the shadows. A dark shape she didn't recognise appeared on the stairs....
