A night in which the walls began to whisper
The 'Tower' dormitory was a place where hundreds of new faces were welcomed each autumn. It stood on the edge of the city, shrouded in mist, close to humming railway tracks and overgrown gardens. It housed Lena, a physics student who liked to stroll down the empty seventh-floor corridor at night and listen to the laughter from behind closed doors. One evening, as she was returning from the library, she noticed that the walls on her floor seemed to make a quiet sound, as if someone was whispering her name.
When she entered her room, Marek, her neighbour from across the street, was already waiting for her, permeated by the smell of coffee and a sleepless night. Behind him, with a beaming smile, was Tamara, a master computer graphic designer who loved to design posters for student events.
- Have you heard the whispers today? - Lena asked, slightly abashed.
Tamara nodded, and Marek glanced nervously at the wall, where someone had written with a large marker: "Only those who hear can hear more".
When Lena touched the wall, she felt a sudden surge of energy - the light in the room trembled, and for a split second she felt like she could see through concrete. Tamara trembled, her lights on her laptop started flashing. Marek, on the other hand, discovered that he could move the cup by sheer force of will - the cup slid across the table, leaving a wet trail behind it.
In disbelief, they began to test their new skills. Lena could feel the movement of the air behind closed doors by raising her hand; Tamara, by touching the keyboard, was able to take control of devices throughout the building; Marek, by concentrating, moved small objects on the tabletop.
The walls whispered louder and louder, and the lights in the corridor began to flicker. At one point there was a clatter, as if someone was running up the stairs. A deep silence fell. Lena looked through the peephole in the door - and that's when she saw a shadow that didn't belong to any of the Tower's inhabitants....
