A night in the Shadow Library
Julia loved walking the cobbled streets of her city at night, but she never expected to find something that would completely change her life one night. This time she was accompanied by Michal, her best friend, who was usually sceptical of all legends and urban tales. It was late, the city was quiet and the fog swirled around the old lamp posts like a silver ribbon. Suddenly Julia noticed a narrow doorway, hidden in the shadows between a barred jewellery shop and an abandoned theatre.
- Can you see it? - she whispered.
- 'It's probably just some kind of back room,' Michal replied, but he stepped closer. The door emanated a soft blue light, and a sign hung above the handle: 'Shadow Library'.
They exchanged glances. Julia gently pressed the handle and the door gave way silently, although it looked long out of use. Inside, they were greeted by the smell of old books, incense and the quiet murmur of whispers. Shelves filled the walls, reaching to the ceiling and winding like a labyrinth. Shadows of books dragged lazily across the floor, as if they had come to life in the presence of visitors.
- 'Okay, this is already strange,' whispered Michael, but Julia was fascinated. Each book was a different colour and their spines shimmered with shimmering symbols.
Suddenly, one of the books slid off the shelf by itself and fell onto the table by the entrance. Julia took it in her hands and felt a gentle tingling in her fingers - the cover was warm and the letters seemed to vibrate under her fingers.
- 'Maybe you shouldn't open it,' chuckled Michael, looking around anxiously.
But Julia was already opening the book. At the same moment, the light in the library dimmed and the shadows began to thicken and pulsate. A quiet whisper flowed from the pages:
- Whoever liberates me, whoever reads me .... let him know the secrets of this night....
Behind their backs there was a quiet crackle, and a human-shaped shadow appeared behind the next shelf, with a face blurred like drizzle on glass.
Julia and Michael froze. What would happen if they read the first spell? And does the way out of the Library of Shadows still exist?
