A Night in the Heart of the Forest
On the edge of town was an old, dense forest that most teenagers were afraid to enter after dark. However, Lena, a thirteen-year-old with an irrepressible imagination, never believed the dark stories of adults. One evening, she convinced her younger brother Bartosz to go on a short hike together, wanting to take pictures of owls. With torches and a camera, they set off into the trees, laughing quietly at their own fears.
As they moved away from the path, they heard something strange - a soft, rhythmic rustling, as if someone was moving right next to them, although there was not a living soul around. Lena stopped and dimmed her torch. For a moment there was complete silence, and then a red fox flitted past them, stopping for a moment and looking at the children with unusual attention. Her eyes shone in the torchlight with a strange, almost human-like glow.
"I don't think it ate us," joked Bartosz, but something about the animal's behaviour made Lena shudder.
As they walked on, they noticed something even more peculiar: various animals - deer, hedgehogs and even a wild boar - had gathered around the clearing in the semi-darkness. They were all looking in one direction; they paid no attention to the people. Lena and Bartosz crouched behind a fallen log, trying to understand what was happening. After a moment, a large grey wolf emerged from within the darkness, at the sight of which the animals parted, as if giving way to him. The wolf raised its head, looked straight at Lena and Bartosz, then spoke in a low, deep voice:
"We have been waiting for you."
Before anyone had time to react, another unfamiliar sound came from the thicket
