It's Halloween night, chilly and cheerful. A light breeze carries leaves down the pavement. Lanterns made of pumpkins glow like little windows. Hania has a cape and a witch's hat. Bruno carries his boxy robot outfit. They walk together through the estate with a torch. Mum waves from the window and says: "Be careful!" A neighbour in a witch's hat gives them sweets. The children thank her and continue walking across the square. Suddenly they hear a quiet bell by an old kiosk. A black kitten with a ribbon is sitting on the pavement. It looks at them and runs towards the gate. Bruno nods and follows the kitten. Hania whispers: "Maybe he wants us to go." Behind the fence is an old house with a veranda. The gate creaks as they open it slowly. A pumpkin waits on the step with a note taped to it. Hania reads: "Knock three times if you are brave." The children look at each other and count in whispers. They count: one, two, and Hania raises her hand. Suddenly the wind quiets and something knocks under the stairs. The handle moves of its own accord and the door swings open.
