A blast from the side of Pomegranate Lake

A blast from the side of Pomegranate Lake
The village of Silver Stand, lost between rolling hills and impenetrable mist, lay on the shores of Pomegranate Lake. The water was so calm here that birds landed on its surface like a piece of blue glass. The people lived modestly, but none could imagine living anywhere else. In this dreamy atmosphere grew up Lena, Daniel and Maks - three friends who were most fascinated by the map that had been hanging in the school for decades. The map was unusual. Drawn a long time ago by a traveller from far away, it showed not only real places but also corners that no one in the village had ever found. Lena, with an artist's flair and a head full of ideas, always claimed that there must be something else there. Daniel, serious and somewhat sceptical, stuck to the facts, but could never quite look away from those strange, twisted lines on the southern shore of the lake. Maks, on the other hand, dreamed of finding something that would turn everyday life upside down - if only for a moment. That afternoon, the sky was thick with clouds. The wind over Pomegranate Lake was changing unexpectedly, bringing the scent of distant forests and sounds that could not be easily understood. Lena walked first along the path leading to the rocky promontory, carrying in her hands an old compass her grandfather had given her. Daniel doggedly compared each turn of the path with what he saw on the map. Maks kept behind, looking out for unfamiliar signs. When they arrived, the dark blue depths of the lake seemed surprisingly deep. A fine mist floated over the surface, and a quiet, repetitive tapping could be heard among the reeds. The three friends approached the old pier. Lena knelt down and dipped her hand in the water - it was surprisingly warm. Suddenly the compass in her hand began to tremble, the pointer spinning in place until it froze, showing straight towards the middle of the lake. - 'That's impossible,' whispered Daniel. - There is nothing here but water. Max leaned over and noticed that something was beginning to glow under the surface. The pulsating light grew stronger with each passing moment, as if something forever hidden longed to come out. The waves rose slightly and an icy blast pierced the air. All three of them suspended their gaze in the middle of the lake as something began to emerge from the depths that none of them could grasp with their minds - a gigantic outline, glinting with blue light, slowly taking shape just below the surface. And then Lena felt the ground beneath their feet begin to tremble gently....
