A bell under the Christmas tree
It was Christmas Eve and the snow was falling like powder. Hania was placing hay under the tablecloth, very carefully. Mum was stirring borscht in the pot and humming a carol. Dad was hanging lights on the Christmas tree by the window. Cat Purr was purring under the armchair and warming his paws. Suddenly the doorbell sounded in the room, not at the door.
Hania looked around and whispered: - Do you hear, Mummy? Mum just smiled and stirred further. The bell sounded a second time, quietly and very close. Purr raised his ears, curled his tail and snorted. A small golden ribbon moved under the Christmas tree. The name Hania was written on the gift card.
Hania knelt by the Christmas tree and looked intently. A tiny star flashed between the branches, like a sparkle. The lights arranged themselves into tiny footprints. The footprints led to the window, straight to the sill. Hania opened the ajar window and took a breath. Then a third bell sounded right next door.
