Zosia and the disappearing bell
It was Christmas Eve morning and snow covered the whole yard. Zosia set gingerbread on a plate and blew flour from her nose. Mum hung the lights and Dad tweaked the silver star. Under the window hung a reindeer sock, empty and soft. Zosia whispered: "Father Christmas, find our house tonight". Suddenly something sounded softly, like a tiny bell in a Christmas tree. Zosia looked at the twigs, but the bell was gone by a thread. A red button and a glittering footprint lay on the windowsill. A whisper reached Zosia: "Zosia ... please help me." Zosia pushed back the curtain and opened the window slightly. The cold pinched her cheek, but she was brave. There were tiny footprints in the snow, like from tiny shoes. They led straight to the balcony and under the Christmas tree itself. Zosia slipped her hand between the branches and lifted one. Something light gripped her finger, and the bell rang again....
