Did You Know?

Under the eyelids of worlds

Under the eyelids of worlds
For several weeks, Lena had been dreaming the same dream: traversing narrow streets where the lantern lights shone pale blue and shadows lined the cobbled alleys like unreal memories. She always ended up in the same place - under a tall tower with a clock that showed an unreal hour. Everyday life, however, had nothing to do with this dream. Lena's life was rather predictable - school, studying, occasional encounters with Maks. It was he who first noticed how much she had changed. - 'You look like you travel somewhere far away every night,' he chuckled one day during break. Lena only smiled mysteriously. She knew that Maks wouldn't believe her anyway. She wouldn't tell him that she wanted to go there for real, to touch the stones under her feet, to hear the clock strike. One night they both fell asleep at their desks, studying for a biology test. They woke up... together, but not in their room. They were surrounded by the shimmering darkness of the city from Lena's dream. The streets were still damp from the rain and the air tasted of ozone. - It's impossible... - whispered Maks, looking around in disbelief. Nevertheless, they set off ahead, guided by the only road they knew from recurring images. The city pulsed with a presence they could not identify - every shop window seemed to be watching, and the lights of the lamps winked as if trying to warn or greet them. They passed a lone girl sitting on a high wall. Thin, silvery wings sprouted from her back and vibrated, moved by an invisible wind. The girl nodded to them and pointed a finger down one of the alleys before dissolving into mist. In the alley was a door - inconspicuous, with a brass knocker. Lena felt they were here not by accident. She took Max's hand and together they crossed the threshold. On the other side, there was no longer a city. They were surrounded by a hall in which people in animal masks stood, silent, staring at them with an unsettling attention. In the middle of the room lay an open volume, and beside it - a familiar clock, its hands moving rapidly backwards. At that moment, the world began to fall apart. The masks fell from their faces, but their owners were still covered by a shadow. Lena and Maks retreated against the wall, looking for an escape route. The deep sound of a clock rang through the air. Lena felt that they were about to find out something they should never have known....
